Tips for Students on Preserving Their Mental Health

Posted on May 22, 2019July 3, 2019 By Deepak

Based on a survey made by the World Health Organization, almost 50% of freshman college students were experiencing some kind of inner conflictson their first year of studying. Depression, suicide attempts, anxiety disorders are common for students who are facing mental disorders. Even though these issues are already wide spread, students experiencing such problems are still not seeking for medication.

But as time passes by, many students are getting aware of issues involving mental health. As the number of students seeking help increases, many helping resources, such as BetterHelp, also get in the picture. We all know that taking care of our own selves is substantial and should be done.

Students on Preserving Their Mental Health

Big straightforward changes such as entering a college can have a huge impact on your life and this doesn’t mean that you should spend a lot to attain good mental health. Here are the five ways to help you deal with mental problems while in college. Not only students but everyone can pursue these tips. The main question is, when do you want to start?

1.  Discuss your feelings

Expressing your feelings can really help in maintaining good behavior and mental health. You should be aware that discussing what you feel doesn’t mean that you are weak. It is one of the ways to keep a well-conditionedbody and mind. Students can manage their emotional problem if they can open up a situation to someone whom they can trust like their school’s guidance counselor or a close friend.

Being heard and supported helps every person to feel less lonely. It is not simple to open up your personal issues and emotions to someone. But, if you don’t know how to start, then just tell what is in your head and why you want to talk about it in the first place. It is more convenient to have a conversation in a natural way and expect that at first, it will be a sort of uncomfortable telling your personal problems but eventually it will become more natural and comfortable.

2.  Do the things that bring you joy

Activities like swimming, playing guitar, sketching, doing yoga and other superb things that you are fond of can help you to overcome stress. They can also improve your self-confidence. Focusing on hobbies like completing a crossword puzzle, camping, running, and other physical and intellectual activities can help you to set aside the things that make you worry and positively diversify your mood and emotion.

3.  Eat nutritious food

Normally, what we eat and feel are interconnected. One good example is when you drink caffeine with sugar you can feel more alert but with some people, it has a negative effect such as anxiety. So it really depends on how the person’s mood reacts to the food they eat. Well, food has a long-term result on a person’s mental health. From head to toe, different nutrients are needed to function well. Remember, any food that benefits your body also psychologically benefits you. Take meals three times a day and drink enough water.

4.  Seek for help

It is normal that we are looking for help if we feel tired and troubled because everything seems to be wrong.  To cope up with this feeling, you should find ways to overcome it and seek for guidance. One good example is when you got tons of school paperwork and all of them are already close to deadlines. As a student, this is a very stressful situation because you need to produce quality outputs in a short period of time. Since everything seems to be solved using the internet, you may look for a site that offers custom paper writing service at affordable prices. It will help to lessen the stress you are getting in completing your school requirements.

5.  Make a research

One of the best and adequate things to do to be prepared for college is to know the basic facts related to mental health and how to overcome emotional disorders. You can go to your school library and look for related books and magazines. You can also talk to your school’s guidance counselor and ask the things that make you curious about mental health. You can also take a course in Psychology and get a major in Counseling to gain deep knowledge and understanding of the human mind and behavior.

Hopefully, these tips will help you overcome your issues and enjoy college life from the very start.
